SHINING A LIGHT ON CHRONIC PAIN TREATMENTS
Hi, I’m William Chiang, an Interventional Pain Management physician with AVALA Pain. I am a double board certified physician in anesthesiology and pain management who served as co-chief during my residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS and co-chief fellow during my fellowship also at UMMC.

PAIN AWARENESS MONTH
September is Pain Awareness Month, a time to highlight the struggles of those enduring chronic pain. As a dedicated pain management specialist, I understand how deeply pain can impact daily life, from physical capabilities to emotional states. Whether you’re facing a new pain or have been battling it for years, remember—you don’t have to go through this alone. Together, we can explore effective strategies to enhance your quality of life.
UNDERSTANDING CHRONIC PAIN AND TREATMENT
Approximately 40% of Americans will experience back pain at some point, and 11-38% deal with acute pain each year. When acute pain lingers beyond three months, it becomes chronic.
When chronic pain emerges, individuals typically start with rest, over-the-counter medications, and lifestyle adjustments. If pain persists, seeking guidance from a primary care physician or surgeon is common. At this stage, diagnostic imaging and physical therapy might identify and address the underlying issue, setting the stage for targeted treatment.
Physical therapy is crucial in recovery and offers more than basic exercises. Depending on the therapist, treatments can include physical manipulation, massage, dry needling, cupping, TENS units, and traditional stretching, strengthening, and range-of-motion exercises.
WHEN TO CONSULT A PAIN MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST
If previous treatments haven’t resolved your pain, a referral to an interventional pain management specialist may be necessary. Pain management integrates a multidisciplinary approach to reduce pain and boost functionality. This involves a blend of conservative care, medications, and injections.

Medications are tailored to your specific symptoms and may include anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxers, neuropathic painkillers, or opioids. They are all part of a personalized treatment plan.

Injections are designed to alleviate pain and improve function and may include epidurals, medial branch blocks (MBB), radiofrequency ablations (RFA), joint injections, nerve blocks, and advanced techniques such as intrathecal pain pumps and spinal cord stimulators.
MY APPROACH TO PAIN MANAGEMENT
My philosophy in pain management is straightforward. I advocate for a comprehensive approach, starting with conservative treatments like physical therapy and chiropractic care. Pain management is a collaborative effort involving coordination with your surgeons, neurologists, physiatrists, rheumatologists, psychologists, and primary care providers when needed.
Every patient’s journey is unique and requires a tailored treatment plan. I am committed to listening to your concerns and providing the time and attention needed to address them. Together, we can make significant strides in improving your pain and enhancing your functionality.
